Bodhgaya Gaya- Buddhist Tour

Mahabodhi Temple

The Mahabodhi Temple stands at the sacred site where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. This iconic temple features a towering 50-meter (170 ft) structure, symbolizing spiritual ascent. The present temple, restored around 1880, sits on a site with a rich history of previous temples, one of which was destroyed during the 11th century. Surrounding the temple are intricately carved railings, some of which are ancient originals, while others are carefully crafted reproductions. Inside the inner sanctuary, a grand statue of Buddha invites deep reverence. Additionally, a Shiva-linga, installed around 860 AD, highlights the temple’s significance to both Buddhists and Hindus. For Hindus, the Mahabodhi Temple is sacred as Lord Buddha is revered as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, making it a unifying site of spiritual devotion.

Bodhi Tree

The Bodhi Tree at the Mahabodhi Temple is believed to be a direct descendant of the original tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. According to legend, a sapling of the original tree was taken to Sri Lanka by Emperor Ashoka’s daughter, Sanghamitta, where it still thrives in Anuradhapura. When the original tree in Bodh Gaya died, a cutting from the Sri Lankan tree was brought back and planted here. Today, this revered tree stands behind the temple, reaching a height of about 80 feet and estimated to be around 115 years old. Beneath its canopy lies the Vajrasana, the red sandstone slab known as the Diamond Throne, where Buddha is believed to have meditated and achieved nirvana. The Bodhi Tree remains a focal point of spiritual significance, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
